As this hardware is local, and not whole body (as conventional systems tend to be), this coil can be operated much more rapidly and efficiently and so is much more suited for Echo Planar Imaging (EPI), the imaging technique most often used for Functional MRI (FMRI) research. Such tools will allow researchers to probe human brain function more reliably, potentially at both higher spatial and temporal resolutions.
