Description
March Air Reserve Base (ARB) 452d Air Mobility Wing (452 AMW) is currently constructing a hangar as part of the KC-46 Beddown Project. A site of potential archeological interest was unearthed during construction. In accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended, and the implementing regulations [36 CFR Part 800], the site requires further assessment to determine potential adverse effects of the construction to historic properties. During excavation activities as part of the KC-46 Beddown, debris was uncovered that suggest the construction activities may have the potential to affect historic properties, as defined by the NHPA. Preliminary investigations indicate the debris dates between 1941 and 1942. The newly discovered debris deposit requires expert evaluation to determine its eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Further, cataloging of items and determination of the extent of the debris is necessary to fulfill NHPA Section 106 requirements. The extent of the excavation is approximately 10 feet wide by 10 feet deep, and up to an extent of 150 feet long.
